Friedlander embarked on the project that would later become Stems after remaining at home for a few months while recovering from aching knees. After exploring a few domestic subjects to little avail, he found himself fascinated by the stems of the flowers his wife Maria would put in vases around the house. Years later, after recovering from knee surgery, he rededicated himself to the subject and finished the project. Stems stands out in Friedlander’s oeuvre for being the only book of true domestic still lifes.
